Digital Media City Landmark Tower, Korea

When we think about skyscrapers, we usually only think of how tall they are, but the Digital Media City Landmark Building in South Korea shows that it is about what is inside the skyscraper, not how tall it is in many cases. This building, which will be 640 metres tall and has 133 floors, will be the third tallest building in the world and the tallest building in Korea and East Asia. With construction beginning last October, it is expected that it will be completed by April 2015, for the low cost of $2.9 billion.

The skyscraper itself will feature a wide assortment of things within it including an observation deck on the 133rd floor that will allow everyone to see all of Seoul, and as far away as Gaeseong, North Korea. This will be the tallest observation deck in the world, a full 11 floors ahead of the observation deck on the tallest building in the world; Burj Khalifa. From the 108th floor to the 130th floor, there will be several six and eight-star hotels, which surpasses the Park Hyatt Hotel for the highest hotel rooms on the planet.

It does not stop there though. The building will also house high-tech offices, apartments, a department store, shopping malls, a convention center, restaurants, media facilities and an interactive aquarium. The aquarium will be an 110,000 square feet and will be the largest of its kind in the world. This aquarium will be extremely high-tech and interactive, costing over one billion dollars over the course of the next five years.

The rundown of the floors for this building is as follows:

132nd to 133rd Floors: Observation deck and media art center

131st Floor: An open studio and broadcasting facility

128th to 130rd Floors: Concert restaurant

108th to 130rd Floors: six to eight star Hotels

85th to 107th Floors: Family and business hotels

46th to 84th Floors: First class apartments

9th to 45th Floors: High tech offices

7th to 8th Floors: Convention centers

1st to 7th Floors: Department stores and shopping malls

Basement Sixth to First Floors: Aquarium

The skyscraper will have windows that will look like windows in traditional Korean houses, and the exterior of the skyscraper will have 40,000 LED panels that will emit light at various colors. The middle of the building will be empty, which allows the structure to move and improves the resistance to bending roughly three-fold. Like many skyscrapers these days, being environmentally friendly is also important and this skyscraper will feature a green roof, and automatic ventilation windows. Mirrors will also be used to direct light throughout the building, helping to save energy on powering lights within the skyscraper. The Digital Media Tower shows that skyscrapers these days are not being built with being the tallest in mind, but having the most in them and being the most environmentally-friendly. This tower is truly going to be a sight to see and experience.

Moving Towers

No, you did not read that wrong. There is indeed a skyscraper being built, which will be completed this year, which moves. It doesn’t move around the city but each floor within the skyscraper does move, giving the skyscraper a consistently changing shape. Called the Dynamic Tower, it is the first such skyscraper in the world to be called a moving skyscraper.

Designed by David Fisher, the tower has 80 floors and each floor spins on a central column for a total of 360 degrees. Each apartment in the tower is expected to cost between $3.7 million and $36 million, with the total cost of the Dynamic Tower reaching roughly $800 million.

Each floor of the tower rotates independently of other floors, completing a full rotation in the space of about 90 minutes. Each floor rotates at the speed of roughly 20 feet per minute. One of the more interesting aspects of this tower is that it is the world’s first prefabricated skyscraper. What this means is that the tower is made up of 40 factory-built modules for each floor and 90 percent of The Dynamic Tower will be built in a factory and shipped to Dubai. Amazingly, this allows the tower to be built in the space of just under two years, which is truly monumental and 30 percent faster than what a typical 80 storey skyscraper takes to be built. The only part that is built at the construction site is the central core that the floors all spin on.

This also makes construction of the tower much safer for workers since most workers will be located in factories where they preinstall kitchen and bathroom fixtures, along with pretty much everything else that the apartments in the tower need.

Now, the really cool thing about The Dynamic Tower is that it is extremely environmentally-friendly. Water is recycled within the tower and the entire tower is powered by wind turbines and solar panels. This gives enough surplus electricity for Dubai to power five other 80-story buildings within the vicinity of The Dynamic Tower. Each floor will have turbines hooked up to harvest the high winds located well-above ground level. In theory, these turbines could generate 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of energy. Each floor will also have solar panels attached to the roof.

For the people who live near the tower, they will never be bored by the look of it. The designers say that the tower will never have the same look at any time in its life. So, when you see it, you are seeing something that will never look that way again. A truly revolutionary concept that could change how skyscrapers look, are powered and are made from now on.

This concept of moving towers has proven to be so popular that there are already plans for a 70-story moving tower to be built in Moscow. It won’t be long before these moving skyscrapers are being made across the United States either.

Skyscrapers are essentially a 20th century invention, and while tall buildings have existed for thousands of years, they reached new heights when skyscrapers began to pop up around the world. Each time a skyscraper was built; there was the drive of the builders to have the tallest building in the city, country and in the world. Since the early part of the 20th century, the drive to have the world’s tallest building has been a constant battle between cities within a country and among countries around the world.

Things started off with the Flatiron Building, which was built to 87 meters and became the tallest skyscraper in the world when it was completed in 1902. The new steel structure of the building allowed the building to reach such a high vertical height and it was not long before other buildings in New York City began to copy the style and build to new heights. The Singer Building and Metropolitan Life Tower both succeeded Flatiron as tallest buildings within the city and the world.

The height of skyscrapers really increased with the Woolworth Building in New York City, which was built overlooking City Hall. Built to 241 meters, it became the world’s tallest building in 1913 when it was completed. It would keep this title until 1930 when the building was surpassed in its height by 40 Wall Street.

The newest world’s tallest skyscraper only had its title for a few months before the Chrysler Building took over title. Built to 319 meters, the Chrysler Building became an icon of New York City, but even its title as world’s tallest skyscraper did not last long. In 1931, only one year after the Chrysler Building was finished, the Empire State Building would rise to 381 meters and become the world’s tallest building. Unlike other buildings that held onto their title for a few years at most, the Empire State Building would remain the world’s tallest building for over 40 years.

In 1972, New York once again built to new heights with the completion of the World Trade Center, which consisted of two towers reaching to the equal height of 417 meters. Their title as world’s tallest skyscrapers would only last one year before the Sears Tower (Willis Tower) was completed in Chicago. This building reached up to 442 meters, or nearly half a kilometer and it would keep the title as the world’s tallest building until 2004. Currently, it remains the tallest skyscraper in the United States and the last, so far, of the American skyscrapers to be considered the tallest in the world.

America’s dominance of the tallest skyscraper category ended with the building of the Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which took over the title as world’s tallest skyscraper in 2004. This building reached to a roof height of 448 meters, but the title of world’s tallest building would not last long for this new skyscraper. Over in the Middle East, the tallest building was about to be built and it would be unlike anything ever built.

In 2010, the title of world’s tallest building passed from Taipei 101 to Burj Khalifa. This building did not beat the Taipei 101 building by a few meters for the title, it beat the building by nearly 400 meters, which amounts to almost half a kilometers in height! Burj Khalifa stands at 828 meters, making it nearly one kilometer high and by far the world’s tallest skyscraper and building. To put it in perspective, this Dubai skyscraper is half-a-kilometer higher than both the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building. The Burj Khalifa also took over the title of world’s tallest free-standing structure over from the CN Tower, which for decades held the title.

Of course, this does not mean that skyscrapers will stop increasing now that the previous tallest record has been shattered. Many buildings are currently building to immense heights of over 500 meters, and in the future there will be some that challenge Burj Khalifa for its title. In fact, the Mile High Tower, proposed to be built in Saudi Arabia, would stand at an astounding 1,600 meters, or double the height of the Burj Khalifa. Whether or not it will be built is a question that cannot be answered quite yet.

In September 2004, the Burj Dubai project started, intending to build what was expected to become the world’s tallest building. In officially opening the building, this January of 2010 – some two years after the originally intended completion date in 2008, the opening ceremony is testament to the spirit of co-operative human endeavour, overcoming all obstacles, including global recession, to achieve an outcome which is recognized as being second to none – the achi evement of having built the tallest building in the world.

Despite good progress until late 2008, the fate of the Burj Dubai was left somewhat in the balance when the exposure of the emirate of Dubai to the financial havoc caused by global recession became apparent, with Burj Dubai looking likely to become one of many fire sale items that might need to be sold off to get the emirate out of the red. However, in the pomp and ceremony of the opening day was included a re-naming ceremony for the Burj Dubai – and it was formally opened as the Burj Khalifa – by way of tribute to the leader of Abu Dhabi – Sheik Khalifia bin Zayed Al Nahayan who recently provided financial assistance to the neighboring Dubai to the tune of CAD 11 ($10) billion securing the financial future of Dubai and ensuring completion of the Burg Khalifa, enabling it to take its place as the fully accredited tallest building in the world. It can be seen from 95 kilometers away. The Khalifa Tower is around half a mile high and overlooks the entire city, including existing tall buildings, it is expected to be a tourist magnet, not only for its unique height, but its location from which can be accessed all of the wonders of Dubai – the world’s largest arch bridge, the twirling tower, a refrigerated beach and some artificial islands shaped like a map of the world – for a vacation or a stopover, this new centre for tourism in Dubai promises an experience in the grandest style and well worth including in your travel plans, particularly for those who enjoy fine dining and those who love to shop.

There are over 160 levels in the Burj Khalifa – including the area given over to the Armani Hotel. The elevator has the longest travel distance in the world and there are double deck elevators which travel at 10 meters per second-the highest speeds to take you up to the highest level observation deck, where breath taking panoramic views can be enjoyed by night and day. Most of the lower levels of the Burj Khalifa are taken up by the luxurious Armani Hotel with 160 guest rooms, suites and nine hundred one or two room living accommodation units. There are 37 floors of office space all fitted out with the very latest in design and e-technology – the Burj Khalifa is a new hub for both business and social interaction and will bring some much needed new tourism and trade into the economy of Dubai.

The Ten Tallest Skyscrapers In The World

For many years the Empire State Building in New York, USA was the unrivalled nominee for being the tallest building in the world. Since this building was completed in 1931, at 381 meters high, technology would have to advance for nearly seven decades before its height could be surpassed. In 1996, Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen, China became the world’s tallest building, at 384 meters.

Whilst there are many tall buildings currently under construction, in terms of actual completed tall buildings which are both completed and still in existence (for example the World Trade Centre is no longer on the list), and taller than the Shun Hing Square, there are several, which have displaced the Empire State Building to now ranking 14th on the list, followed by the Shun Hing Square in Shenzhen at number 13.

The Two International Finance Centre in Hong Kong, at number 10, is followed by the Jin Mao Building which is next at number 9 and the 8th tallest building is the Guangzhou West Tower, Guangzhou in China.

The 7th tallest building in the world is the Wills (formerly Sears) Tower in Chicago. Number 6 on the list is the Greenland Financial Centre in Nanjing.

The Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, follow at numbers 4 and 5, and then there is the Shanghai World Financial Centre, China, placed at number 3. The previous tallest building in the world was the Taipei 101 Tower in Taipei, Taiwan and now this is surpassed by the re-named Burj Dubai – making it the tallest building in the world – the Burj Kalifa, in Dubai.

There are criteria which must be met for being the highest building in the world which is not just a matter of constructing a huge antenna on top of the roof to gain that extra size. According to the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, towers per se do not count, unless they also have floors so as to qualify them to be classified as buildings. A building such as the Taipei Tower is named as a tower but is still a building for ranking purposes because of its design and intended use as a commercial, residential or manufacturing building which is actually occupied. Height is measured from the ground to the structural highest point of the roof – spires are included but you cannot add into the count such things as flag poles or radio masts or antenna.

Heights and rankings of tall buildings are often disputed, and other lists which are informed from web based data may vary from the official listing above, which has been made up from data obtained by the Council. There are many other buildings around the world still in process of construction but they do not form part of the list because to meet Council requirements – a building must be “topped out”. Burj Kalifa is 828 meters high which tops the Empire State by just over double its size – the amenities of the buildings today are far in advance of the original pioneer development – the Empire State Building.

The Dos and Don’ts of Tasteful Architecture

In the present day, so much of building seems to be obsessed with size. There was a time when you could build the world’s tallest building – assuming you had a spare few hundred million dollars, anyway – and sit back and relax for a decade or so, knowing that if anyone asked about the world’s largest building, your name would come up. Now, the moment someone builds a dizzyingly tall skyscraper which surpasses all that has gone before, you can be sure that there is someone sitting, taking notes and saying “Right – I want it about ten meters taller than that one, OK?”

The upshot of this is, increasingly, a dislike among many for such grandiose statements of intent. People are uncomfortable with massive buildings – mostly not out of a sense of vertigo, but simply from personal taste. The Ryugong Hotel in Pyongyang, as well as being about a half of the way to completion, is enormous – and at the present time, grotesque. Although the Burj al-Arab is to many people’s tastes – including the tennis legend Roger Federer, who spends time there – to others it is a statement of pointless size, a standing monument to dimension rather than architecture. If we keep building them taller than the last one, sooner or later we will have revolving restaurants in lower earth orbit. The food will be terrible, but the waiting lists will still be epic.

This is not to say that large buildings cannot be aesthetically impressive, and anyway, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, it has to be said that there could be a lot more concentration on other aspects of what makes a building impressive. Invention and subtlety can go a long way, so why do we always insist on a building which breaks the clouds and keeps on going?

There are other mistakes made by architects who simply hear the bit where the person commissioning the building says “…and I want people to talk about it!”. Building something that will be memorable can just be about complementing your surroundings in the most attractive way, but all too often architects – through their brief or through their overarching ambition – will look to assault the senses. If they can’t build it taller than the others, they will use more lights. If they cannot do that, then they’ll try and shape it like something no-one else has thought of. Ambition does not have to equal grandiosity.

Then again, there are probably many of us who will admit to having a keenness for a particular building which conforms to all of the lazy standards and that may well be the reason they keep getting built. However much we may wince at what we see most of the time, we look at – for example – Dubai’s Rose Rotana and think “I should be appalled, I should be feeling sick, but for some reason it works”. Well, some of us do, anyway. And that is the point – there are so many ways in which a building can offend, but if enough of us say “Hmm, I like that!”, then they will continue to be built.

The BOC Tower, Hong Kong

Much of modern architecture is about making a statement. In fact, it is probably truer to say that architecture has always in some way been about making a statement. Even the most unremarkable buildings have something to say about themselves, even if that thing is simply “I am simple and unobtrusive, it is what happens inside that is important”. Nevertheless, the increase in the amount of money spent on architecture has been enough to persuade architects that what they must provide in this day and age is a little bit of “bang for your buck”. Any major development today, you can be assured, will not be a simple straight up-and-down edifice with sober decoration. One look at the Dubai skyline will make clear the direction in which the wind of modern architecture is blowing.

As far as statements go, it is not merely the modern day buildings that seek to make themselves heard, as a look through the last few decades will tell you. One building which has been in situ for nearly twenty years in its current form, the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, is very much a statement building. Its bold lines are certainly impressive, and although it was conceived in the Eighties and opened in 1990 it still looks modern to most eyes. With the importance of the number eight in Chinese culture, the plan was to open the tower on the eighth of August, 1988 (8.8.88). This did not happen, and this seems to fit the story of the tower, as it seems to deviate from the long-held beliefs about auspicious buildings and projects in Chinese culture.

For one thing, the building does not conform to the standard practices of feng shui which are broadly considered to be of major importance in China and its territories, in some places seeming almost to have a sense of open defiance against the rules. This is not quite the intention, and in fact the architect who conceived it, I.M. Pei, consulted with experts before finalising the design, removing a majority of the X-shaped structures from the final look as they are considered to bring bad luck. On the other hand, the presence of numerous sharp lines in the building is considered to be provocative. Nonetheless, the building has yet to be befallen by any major difficulties. On being built it was the tallest building in all of Asia, and the first outside the United States to break the fabled 1,000 foot mark.

One other interesting feature of the Bank of China Tower is its shape. From certain angles it bears a marked resemblance to a meat cleaver, and indeed this shape is known as a “cleaver building”. While this in itself may seem to be just a common fact, it becomes interesting when one notes that the “blade” of this cleaver points across the road at another building – the headquarters of the Hong Kong branch of HSBC, to be specific. A coincidence? Possibly, and possibly not, but interesting to ponder nonetheless.

Taipei 101

In a world obsessed with extremes, and where publicity is king, it is quite something to be able to say that you are at the further extreme of anything. To be the tallest person in the world, although it may have its inconvenient points, is certainly a claim that will entitle you to publicity. Being the world’s richest person will encourage other people to do business with you, ensuring that you simply get richer. Although it is not always universally positive to be able to claim that you are or have the best, the tallest, the richest or the most famous of anything, it does entitle you to certain perks of which recognition is arguably the most powerful. On a worldwide level, having the tallest building in the world certainly puts you front and center in any architectural for um.

As things stand, then, the Taipei 101 tower is a building with a lot to envy. At present – and until at least the 2nd of December this year – the tower remains the tallest building in the world. Standing at 509.2 meters above ground to its highest point, and 139.2 meters to its top floor, the Taipei 101 tower is taller than any other currently habitable building in the world. One tower currently outstrips it in terms of height – the Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates – and at present it is not habitable, and will not be until its opening date, currently slated as being in three months’ time. Since its completion in 2004, Taipei 101 has held this title, one which has grown in importance as the world of publicity has gained strength.

It is all the more impressive for the fact that Taipei is found in one of the areas of the world with the highest incidence of typhoon winds and earthquake tremors. The building simply could not have been built were it unable to withstand such conditions, and therefore great care was taken to ensure that this was included in its building plans. As a result, it is capable of withstanding winds of over 130 miles per hour and the strongest earthquakes that the tectonic plates are ever likely to throw at it. innovative engineering was required both for this level of stability and its enormous height – and for any combination of the two.

A lot of the publicity which surrounds the Taipei 101 tower is not to do with its tenants but with its fascinating idiosyncrasies which make for fascinating facts. For example, the name of the tower refers not only to the 101 floors above the ground, but also to the fact that it was built in the first year of a new Chinese century (100+1). Another reason behind this name is that 100 is viewed worldwide as a number of perfection (anything deemed to be 100% is seen as perfect) – the idea being that Taipei 101 goes one better than that. The number eight is seen as a renewal of time, as each week has seven days (the eighth marking a new week). In connection with this and the association of eight as a “lucky number”, the outside tower is made up of eight segments of eight floors. Also interesting is the external design, which features touches of specifically Chinese architecture like the traditional pagodas and ruyi figures.

Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank (HSBC) Main Building

Anyone visiting Hong Kong will be unable to miss seeing the most expensive skyscraper in the territory and one of the most expensive in the world. Built while Hong Kong was still under the control of Britain, but during the normalisation period during which its return to Chinese control was assured, the headquarters of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation – HSBC for short – is a quite impressive building. Actually, that rather undersells it, as it is one of the most fascinating structures in Asia and the world beyond, for many reasons.

It became apparent that a building such as the HSBC Main Building would be necessary in the 1970s. After more than a century during which headquarters were built, knocked down, moved and rebuilt, in 1978 it was decided that the bank might as well tear down its headquarters which were, in any event, too small to hold all of its departments. People and sections were scattered in far-flung parts of Central Hong Kong and it was felt that a proper headquarters would be needed – one which could hold all departments and provide an element of streamlining to the city. It would take another seven years to have it built, and when it was completed it was the most expensive building in the world. Although it may have since been outstripped in this respect, it is still an impressive edifice.

The final cost of the building is believed to have been 5.2 billion Hong Kong dollars, close to US$670million. The architect who conceptualized the building was none other than the legendary British architect Sir Norman Foster, and it has many of his signature touches, not least its epic size but minimalist design. 30,000 tonnes of steel were used in its construction, and from the outside it is one of those classic skyscrapers that looks like a glass palace. There is good reason for this transparency, too.

The building may have taken place between 1979 and 1985, before ecological concerns became quite as big a consideration and quite as fashionable as they are now. It is, however, an excellent example of how one can build a skyscraper without excessive damage to the environment nor waste of energy. Due to the glass edifice of the exterior and the bank of giant mirrors which sits atop the atrium, much of the indoor lighting is provided naturally. The coolant for the air conditioning inside the building (which can be a godsend in a glass-based structure – is natural sea water.

There are many things which make the HSBC Main Building a building quite unlike any other. Not least of these is the fact that it relies very little on elevators inside the building, and people moving between floors tend to do so by way of escalators instead. This kind of personality makes the building one of considerable interest. Built with the principles of Feng Shui in mind, the building has a vast expanse of open ground in front of it, with only Statue Square separating it from Victoria Harbour, meaning that workers can look out onto water (in Feng Shui this is important for personal wealth. All in all, it is an interesting building indeed.

Q1 – World’s Tallest Condo

When it comes to building a tower that will stick in the minds of the people of the world, there is nothing like height for making your point. Certainly there are world famous towers that do not rely on height to take their place among the elite, and no-one would seek to deny that – the Eiffel Tower is one such building – but when it comes to new builds, if you want to truly impress a watching world there is nothing like a skyscraper to get heads nodding and tongues wagging. For this reason, the tallest buildings in the world will always be the subject of much discussion, and this makes the title of “tallest residential building in the world” one that is keenly fought for.

The current holder of this title is Q1 (short for Queensland One) located in Surfers Paradise on Australia’s Gold Coast. Standing at an amazing 1,058 feet tall and 78 storeys high, Q1 is truly remarkable. It is one of those buildings that throws up fascinating facts whenever it is brought up in conversation, simply because it is hard to convey how remarkable something is through raw data alone. Among other things, the building is capable of withstanding the force from ten jumbo jets pushing against it – in the highly unlikely circumstance of that happening – because it has a reinforced “honeycomb” core. The elevator in the Q1 can go from the bottom to the top floor – 77 floors up – in 49 seconds.

Facts like these are what it takes to convey just how impressive the Q1 tower is. It is perhaps no surprise that it cost approximately AUS$400million (US$307million) to build. If you want to live there, however, you will need to take on a substantial cut of that cost. Olympic champion swimmer Ian Thorpe reportedly bought the Penthouse apartment for a sum of money believed to be in the range of $12million, immediately making it the most expensive apartment in Queensland. To stay in the building for a night will cost you less than that – in the region of AUS$319 (US$245).

Often when a building of similar size is built, there is a concern about its height making it structurally unsound, and at its highest point a risk of vulnerability in high winds. For the Q1 this is not a problem – the furthest it will move even in a cyclone is 600 millimetres.

Of course, all of this says very little about the building itself as a residential property. On that front, it is one of the most desirable places in Australia and beyond with world class dining and recreational facilities as well as retail outlets and a very strong aesthetic. There is tropical landscaped garden along with lagoon pools, and for those people who need to relax after a long day there is also a day spa. Top class conference facilities make it an ideal place for a business investment, too.
